Trail review

From the track and the published guides

The trail

Miller Rock is a dead-end network in the Roosevelt National Forest off Hwy 7 west of Lyons: a steep, rocky road climbs from the trailhead to a junction, and three forest roads run out and back from there. FunTreks rates it difficult for the steep, rocky climb to enter and the tight trees, at 9.2 miles and about 3 hours. 4x4Explore rates it difficult (8) and counts 11.74 miles with every branch and spur. Trails Offroad has it at 4.4 stars from 47 reviews and typically open year-round.

Our run

Saturday, September 26: all three branches in just under four hours, 10.0 miles with 2h 28m of it moving. The entrance climb gains 600 ft in 0.8 mile, about a 14% average grade. The Miller Rock branch tops out at the day’s high point, 8,637 ft, where we stopped for 15 minutes; the Sawmill branch is the longest at 4.7 miles round trip, with one pitch near 24%; and the Creek branch turned around at 8,011 ft. The longest stop was 20 minutes at the junction at 12:19 PM.

Good to know

  • Trails Offroad notes there is no parking for trailers or unlicensed vehicles at the start.
  • Everything past the junction is out and back, so the day’s mileage depends on how many branches you run. 4x4Explore counts 11.74 miles with every spur.
  • The Sawmill branch drops to 7,782 ft, about 600 ft below the junction, so the way back is a climb.
  • FunTreks calls out tight trees on the way through.
